Pharmacognosy with Biology and Medicinal Genetics Department was established under the rector’s order 151 on 30th June, 2000. At that time PhD, associate professor Svitlana Marchyshyn was the acting head of the department.

Pharmacognosy with Medicinal botany Department was established on 1st July, 2003 and Doctor of Biological Sciences, professor Lyudmyla Fira became the head of Department. Since 2009 Department is being headed by PharmD, prof. Svitlana Marchyshyn.

Disciplines in English and Ukrainian languages are studied by students of 2nd, 3rd and 5th years: Pharmaceutical Botany, Pharmacognosy, Resources of Medicinal Plants and also Medicinal Plants and Phytotherapy (specialization course). Syllabus and methodical instructions for foreign students in English and Russian languages are developed. Lectures on all subjects are read using multimedia software.

Teachers systematically use and discuss test questions KROK-1 and KROK-2 during practical classes. Teachers are involved in the preparation and publication of collections of these tests.

Botanical garden of our Department is situated at training and health center “Chervona Kalyna”, Terebovlya district, Dryzhba village. Various medicinal plants studied at practical classes are grown there. During training-field practice medicinal plants and herbarium samples of medicinal plants required for practical classes are collected and prepared by the Pharmacy students of 2nd, 3rd and 5th years.

I-IV National conferences “Chemistry of Natural Compounds” dedicated to investigation of medicinal plants and main aspects of creating new drugs on their basis, standardization and organization of drug production were conducted in 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016 year on the basis of our Department.Scientists from Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Vinnytsia, Chernivtsi, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Zaporizhia, Yaroslavl’ (Russian Federation), Voronezh (Russian Federation) etc.

The Head of Department,

professor Svitlana Marchyshyn

Svitlana Marchyshyn graduated from Lviv State Medical Institute. In 1983 defended scientific thesis on “Extraction methods for phenolic compounds from Arnica montana and Arnica foliosa, their pharmacodynamic and effectiveness in liver damage”. In 1993 she was awarded the title of associate professor. She defended a doctoral dissertation on “Pharmacological foundation for the creation of a new medicinal product based on a common couch extract”. In 2000 Svitlana Marchyshyn took an active part in the creation of the Pharmaceutical faculty of Ternopil State Medical Academy and for two years was a dean of the faculty. Svitlana Marchyshyn is a Member of the specialized academic council D. 64.605.03. in National Pharmaceutical University (Kharkiv).

Research interests: - Studying of medicinal plants and creation of new medicines containing biologically active substances from them; - Pharmacological foundation of creation new medicines from medicinal plants substances.

Scientific publications and ratings: She is the author and co-author of over 300 scientific publications including 2 textbooks on pharmacognosy (including national), 7 monographs, 5 information lists, 10 patents, 6 methodical recommendations, 1 author's certificate, 1 dictionary-reference book, etc.

Associate-professor Mariia Shanaida,

PhD

In 1996 Mariia Shanaida graduated from the Ternopil State Pedagogical University and received a Diploma with honors. In 2006 she graduated from the National Pharmaceutical University. She has been working in TSMU since 2001.

In 2002 Mariia Shanaida defended her thesis for the degree of candidate of Biological Sciences (PhD), specialty 03.00.05. Botany. From 2007 year to nowadays she is an associate professor of the Department of Pharmacognosy with Medical Botany. She was the supervisor of 10 diploma and 2 master degree projects.

Scientific interests: pharmacognostic research of medicinal plants belonging to the Lamiaceae Family.

Scientific publications: she is the author and co-author of more than 140 educational and scientific publications.

Associate -professor, Ivanna Kernychna

PhD

In 2002 she graduated Ternopil State Pedagogical University.

Ivanna Kernychna defended scientific thesis on “Study of the antioxidants and enterosorbents efficiency in the intoxication by zinc and copper salts” (2007 y.).

For the first time she investigated the chemical composition of Viburnum opulus leaves. The efficiency and expediency of the Viburnum opulus using in the intoxication by zinc and copper salts has been shown. In 2013 she was awarded the title of associate professor.

Research interests: pharmacognostic research of wild and cultivated medicinal plants from Caprifoliaceae and Chenopodioideae. Was a supervisor of 4 diploma projects.

Scientific publications: she is the author and co-author of about 85 educational and scientific publications.


Associate-professor, Olha Demydyak

PhD

Olha Demydyak graduated from Ternopil State Pedagogical University in 2001.

She defended scientific thesis “Pharmacognostic research of Arnica montana herb and Arnica foliosa herb” for the degree of candidate of Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD), specialty 14.00.02 – Pharmaceutical chemistry and Pharmacognosy (scientific supervisor prof. Svitlana Marchyshyn) (2009).

From 2015 to the present she is an associate-professor of the Department of Pharmacognosy with Medical Botany. Was a supervisor of 2 diploma projects.

Research interests: Currently conducts scientific research on pharmacognostic study of cultivated plants of Asteraceae family.

She is the author and co-author of about 55 educational and scientific publications (16 articles, 3 patents, 2 information lists and 32 theses).

Associate-professor, Iryna Dakhym

PhD

In 2005 she graduated from the pharmaceutical faculty of Ternopil State Medical University and received a Diploma with honors, in 2010 she graduated from the magistracy in the specialty "Pharmacy" and received a master's degree with honors.

In June 2015, Iryna Dakhym defended her thesis for the degree of candidate of Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD), specialty 14.00.02 – Pharmaceutical chemistry and Pharmacognosy (scientific supervisor prof. Svitlana Marchyshyn).

Research interests: pharmacognostic research of wild and cultivated medicinal plants.

Scientific publications: she is the author and co-author of about 35 educational and scientific publications (5 scientific-methodical, 1 patent and 1 information list are among them)

assistant professor Liudmyla Slobodianiuk

PhD

In 2013 she graduated from the pharmaceutical faculty of Ternopil State Medical University, in 2014 she graduated from the magistracy in the specialty "Pharmacy" and received a master's degree with honors. Works on the implementation of the dissertation on “Pharmacognostic research of stachys (Stachys sieboldii Mig.)”.

Research interests: Pharmacognostic research of cultivated medicinal plants.

In May 2018 she defended her thesis for the degree of candidate of Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD), specialty 14.00.02 – Pharmaceutical chemistry and Pharmacognosy (scientific supervisor prof. Svitlana Marchyshyn).

Scientific publications: She is the author and co-author of 26 educational and scientific publications (10 articles, 15 theses and 1 methodical recommendations).

PhD

In 2012 she graduated from the pharmaceutical faculty of Ternopil State Medical University, in 2013 she graduated from the magistracy in the specialty "Clinical Pharmacy" and received a master's degree with honors.

Research interests: Pharmacological research of medicinal plants.

In 2018 she defended her thesis for the degree of candidate of Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD), specialty 14.03.05 – Pharmacology (scientific supervisor prof. Svitlana Marchyshyn).

Scientific publications: She is the author and co-author of 25 educational and scientific publications

Elina Parashchuk, assistаnt

In 2011 she graduated from the pharmaceutical faculty of Ternopil State Medical University, in 2012 she graduated from the magistracy in the specialty "Pharmacy" and received a master's degree .

Works on the implementation of the dissertation on “Pharmacodynamic and pharmacological study of lumbar femur (Pimpinella saxifraga)”.

Research interests: Pharmacognostic research of cultivated medicinal plants.

Scientific publications: She is the author and co-author of 7 scientific publications.
